For centuries the first question anyone in north Lancashire asked about a court case was whether it would be heard at the castle. Lancaster Castle tried the Pendle witches, earned a grim reputation for its death sentences, and sat as a Crown Court until 2012, when the last judge left and serious criminal work moved south to Preston. The city's solicitors stayed. Lancaster remains the legal centre for a district that runs from the Lune Valley and the edge of the Forest of Bowland to Morecambe, Heysham and Carnforth on the bay.
Lancaster's courts today
The city keeps a magistrates' court and a county and family court, so most civil claims, possession cases, divorce finances and children matters are still heard locally. Anything the magistrates send for trial or sentence goes to Preston Crown Court, a short train ride away, and a Lancaster criminal solicitor travels with the case. Employment tribunal claims are listed by the tribunal's north-west region and heard mostly by video, with Manchester as the fallback.
Who needs a solicitor here
Lancaster University at Bailrigg and the University of Cumbria campus make this a student city, with the lets, deposits and houses in multiple occupation that follow in Bowerham, Scotforth and the city centre, and with academic employment disputes, spin-outs and research contracts. The Royal Lancaster Infirmary, the two power stations and the port at Heysham, the district council and the small manufacturers along the Lune are the other employers. The bay is where Lancashire retires: Morecambe, Bolton-le-Sands, Carnforth and Silverdale have some of the county's oldest populations, so wills, lasting powers of attorney, care-fee planning, probate and equity release are the daily work of many Lancaster firms. Farming families in the Lune Valley and on the Bowland fells need tenancy, partnership and succession advice, and Morecambe's holiday parks and seafront flats generate their own conveyancing and landlord problems. Flooding, coastal risk and planning in two protected landscapes shape the property work.
