Derby Square is a good place to start. The Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts fill one side of it, the Crown Court sits inside, and within a few minutes' walk along Castle Street, Dale Street and Old Hall Street are most of the city's law firms, from national practices with waterfront offices to two-partner firms above shops. Liverpool has been a legal centre for as long as it has been a port, and its solicitors still act for shipping lines and insurers as well as for the whole of Merseyside: Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and Wirral.
Two court buildings, two kinds of case
Criminal work runs through Derby Square, where Liverpool Crown Court is among the largest outside London and the magistrates deal with the volume beneath it. Civil work goes a few streets north to the Liverpool Civil and Family Court on Vernon Street: county court claims, possession cases, divorce finances, disputes about children, and the Business and Property Courts in Liverpool for commercial, insolvency and property litigation. The employment tribunal has its own Liverpool hearing centre too, so a claim from a Merseyside workplace rarely means a trip to Manchester.
What brings people in Liverpool to a solicitor
The container terminal at Seaforth, the ferry and cruise terminals and the logistics parks behind them employ thousands on shifts, through agencies and under contracts that change hands, and the hospitals, the universities, the city council and the car plant at Halewood add employment disputes of their own. Liverpool has an unusually large rented sector: students around Smithdown Road and Kensington, young professionals in city-centre blocks often sold off-plan to investors, and family terraces across Anfield, Walton and Bootle, many of them inside the council's selective licensing area. Landlord and tenant law, deposit disputes, building safety and leasehold problems follow from that. Family law is in constant demand across a city of large, close families, as are wills and probate for a generation that bought its terraces cheaply decades ago. Liverpool is also known nationally for personal injury work, and its criminal defence firms handle everything from a match-day arrest to an organised crime trial that runs for months.
Paying for a Liverpool solicitor
Fixed fees are standard for conveyancing, wills, lasting powers of attorney and uncontested divorce; disputes are charged by the hour, usually with an estimate for each stage. Criminal legal aid is still widely available in Liverpool, and a number of firms hold family and housing legal aid contracts as well. Check home or car insurance for legal expenses cover before paying privately, and read whether you can get legal help for free. Every firm listed here is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority; the featured ones have also passed the site's own verification of SRA record, contact details and public reviews.
