Best Solicitors in Hull

Much of Kingston upon Hull lies below the level of a high tide, held back by the banks of the Humber and the tidal barrier across the River Hull, and the city has learned to take water seriously. Its courts sit on the dry side of the Old Town: the Hull Combined Court Centre on Lowgate houses the Crown Court, the county court and the family court, the magistrates' court is a few streets away, and employment tribunal hearings are listed in Hull as well as Leeds. Solicitors cluster in the Old Town and along the main roads out of the centre, with offices in Hessle, Cottingham and Beverley, in the East Riding villages and towns that function as Hull's suburbs but answer to a different council.

The estuary economy

Hull is a port before it is anything else. The docks east of the city handle North Sea ferries, timber, cars and containers; the factory at Alexandra Dock builds turbine blades for the wind farms off the coast; and the chemical works at Saltend and the refineries on the south bank employ thousands more. Reckitt and Smith & Nephew both began here and still have major sites, the caravan makers of Hull and the East Riding build static caravans for parks across the country, and the university on Cottingham Road, the hospitals at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill, the council and the port companies employ the rest. Fishing, which once defined Hessle Road, survives mainly in memory.

Houses on the flood plain

Hull's housing is cheap by any English city's standards and almost all of it is on a flood plain. The floods of June 2007 put water into thousands of homes, and every purchase since has come with a flood search, a conversation about insurance and, often, a Flood Re policy. The stock is terraced: the Avenues off Princes Avenue, the streets off Hessle Road, Holderness Road and Beverley Road, and the council estates of Bransholme, Orchard Park and Preston Road, still owned and managed by the council. Students from the university rent in Newland and Cottingham, the Marina and Victoria Dock have leasehold flats, and the villages of the East Riding, from Anlaby to Hedon, take the families who move out. Wages are low, so legal aid, debt and housing advice matter more in Hull than in most cities.

Fees and legal aid in Hull

Fixed fees for conveyancing, wills, lasting powers of attorney and uncontested divorce are the rule, and Hull prices are modest; disputes are charged by the hour or in capped stages. Legal aid is available for most criminal defence, for family cases involving domestic abuse or children's services, and for some housing and debt matters, though not every firm holds a contract, so ask early. Legal expenses cover on a home or motor policy is worth checking, and the guide to free legal help explains the options. Every firm listed is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority; the featured firms have also passed the site's own verification of contact details, SRA record and reviews.
