Leicester wears its history openly: a king found under a car park and reburied in the cathedral, the Golden Mile of Belgrave Road lit up for Diwali, the hosiery and knitwear factories that once clothed the country, and two universities that fill the city with students every autumn. It is one of the most diverse cities in Britain, and its solicitors reflect that, with firms that take instructions in Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Polish and Somali as readily as in English.
Where the courts and the firms are
Leicester's justice system is compact. The Crown Court, the county court and the family court share the Wellington Street site, the magistrates' court is a few minutes away on Pocklingtons Walk, and the city has its own employment tribunal hearing centre. Most of the larger firms are within walking distance, around New Walk, Friar Lane and the streets between the Clock Tower and the station, while smaller practices serve Belgrave, Highfields, Evington, Oadby, Wigston, Braunstone and Beaumont Leys, and the county towns of Loughborough, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, Hinckley and Coalville.
Each one is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. A firm with a verified badge on this site has also passed our independent verification of its SRA standing, contact details and reputation.
What Leicester people need
Work generates a large share of it. Leicester's garment factories drew national attention over pay and conditions, and claims for unpaid wages and holiday pay still follow; the logistics parks along the M1 and M69 bring redundancy and agency-worker questions; the University Hospitals of Leicester, the two universities and head offices such as Next at Enderby produce the discrimination, whistleblowing and settlement agreement work of any large employer. Property is the next biggest: Victorian terraces in Clarendon Park and the West End, many of them student lets, newer estates at Hamilton and Ashton Green, larger homes in Stoneygate and Oadby, and the shops along Belgrave Road and Narborough Road with their leases to negotiate. Family law in Leicester often has an international dimension, with relatives, property and marriages in India, East Africa, Pakistan, Poland or Somalia, and the city's family businesses need wills and succession plans as much as contracts.
Paying for it
Fixed fees are standard for conveyancing, wills, lasting powers of attorney and uncontested divorce; most firms charge by the hour for contested work and will give a written estimate. Criminal legal aid is means-tested but widely held by Leicester firms, family legal aid survives for domestic abuse and care cases, and legal expenses insurance on a home policy is often overlooked. Our guide to free and low-cost legal help lists the options.
Using this page
Each area of law has its own Leicester page below, with a guide and the firms that offer it. The Leicester search finds solicitors near any address, the Leicestershire page covers the county from Lutterworth to Melton, and the neighbouring pages for Coventry and Birmingham are a short drive down the M69. The legal insights library explains the law behind each problem.
