Saxon kings were crowned at Kingston, or so the stone outside the Guildhall claims, and the town has been administering something ever since: a royal borough, the seat of Surrey's county council until it moved out, and now a London borough with a Crown Court, a university, a hospital and one of the biggest shopping centres in south-west London. For a place of its size, Kingston upon Thames has an unusual amount of law in it.
Court town, market town, university town
Kingston Crown Court on Penrhyn Road tries serious cases from across south-west London, and the lawyers who appear there give the town a legal community larger than its size would suggest. The Ancient Market Place has traded for centuries and still does; the Bentall Centre draws shoppers from half of Surrey; and Kingston University's campuses at Penrhyn Road, Knights Park and Kingston Hill fill the town with students who rent, work part-time and occasionally need a solicitor of their own. The riverside, with its bridge, theatre and restaurants, is the borough's front room.
From Coombe to Chessington
The borough is more varied than the town. Coombe and Kingston Hill have gated estates and some of the most expensive houses in outer London; Surbiton has Victorian villas, mansion flats and a station that is a monument in its own right; New Malden has one of the largest Korean communities in Europe; and Chessington, Tolworth and Hook are post-war suburbs of semis and parades. Kingston Hospital at Norbiton, the council, the university and the shops are the big employers, and many residents commute to Waterloo.
What this means for legal needs
Conveyancing ranges from Coombe mansions and Surbiton flat conversions to the rebuilding of the Cambridge Road estate and the new flats near the station, with student lettings on the landlord and tenant side. Family and divorce work reflects affluent households with pensions, businesses and property abroad. Wills and probate are a staple in Surbiton and Chessington, where many residents have lived for decades. Employment claims come from the hospital, the university and retail as much as from City commuters, business law serves the shops, restaurants and Korean enterprises of New Malden, and the Crown Court anchors a strong criminal defence bar.
Fees and legal aid
Expect fixed fees for wills, conveyancing, powers of attorney and uncontested divorce, and staged charges for disputes; many firms offer a free first meeting. Legal aid remains for criminal defence, domestic abuse and care cases, and the article on free legal help explains who qualifies. All the firms here are regulated by the SRA; the featured ones have also been through the site's verification, which checks contact details, the SRA record and public reviews.
Finding a firm
The sections below take each area of law from a Kingston point of view, with the firms that practise it listed under each, verified first. The Kingston upon Thames search finds solicitors near any address, and the Surrey search covers Esher, Thames Ditton and the county across the river. Next door, Best Solicitors in Richmond upon Thames covers Richmond and Twickenham and Best Solicitors in Merton covers Wimbledon; the capital as a whole is at Best Solicitors in London, and the legal insights library explains the basics.
