Walk north from Clerkenwell Green and the borough changes every few hundred yards: warehouse studios full of architects and software teams, then the Georgian squares of Barnsbury and Canonbury, then the council estates of Holloway and Finsbury Park, with the Emirates Stadium rising in between. Islington is one of the most densely populated places in the country, packed into a narrow strip between Camden and Hackney, and almost everyone in it lives in a flat: a conversion of a Victorian terrace, a council or housing association block, or a new tower by the canal at City Road. That density, and the gap between the squares and the estates, drive most of what Islington's solicitors do.
Courts and the local legal scene
Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Holloway Road handles the borough's criminal cases, and those of much of north London besides, and Pentonville prison on the Caledonian Road holds many of the people remanded from it. Civil and housing claims go to the county court, at Clerkenwell or Central London, family cases to the Central Family Court in Holborn, and serious criminal trials to whichever Crown Court takes them. Islington's law firms are spread along Upper Street, around Angel and Clerkenwell and up Holloway Road, from large commercial practices to legal aid firms and a long-established law centre.
What Islington needs
Housing dominates. Islington Council and the housing associations own a large proportion of the borough's homes, so disrepair, succession, possession defences and the major-works bills sent to Right to Buy leaseholders fill solicitors' diaries, while the private flats in converted terraces bring lease extensions, share-of-freehold disputes and arguments between the four households behind one front door. Clerkenwell's design, architecture and technology firms generate employment claims, shareholder disputes, contracts and intellectual property in equal measure. Arsenal's home games, Upper Street's bars and the Holloway Road at night bring public order, drugs and licensing. The Whittington Hospital, Moorfields, the universities at Holloway Road and Northampton Square and the council are the big employers, and a borough of young professionals, students and long-standing Irish, Turkish, Bangladeshi and Somali communities produces family, immigration and inheritance work with an international edge.
Paying for a solicitor in Islington
Islington still has legal aid provision, particularly for housing, crime, immigration and family work, but contracts are limited and firms fill quickly, so ask early. Privately, wills, conveyancing, powers of attorney and uncontested divorces are usually fixed-fee and disputes hourly with an estimate per stage; home insurance sometimes includes legal expenses cover.
