A third runway at Heathrow is back on the national agenda, and no borough has more riding on the answer than Hillingdon. The airport is inside its boundary, along with the villages of Harmondsworth, Sipson and Longford that a runway would flatten, the hotel strip along the Bath Road, the cargo sheds and the head office of the country's largest airline. For solicitors in Hillingdon the airport has always meant work: employment disputes from airlines and ground handlers, compulsory purchase and blight questions, importation and customs cases, immigration detention at Harmondsworth, and a housing market shaped by noise contours.
Beyond the airport
Hillingdon is a long borough, and its northern half feels nothing like its southern one. Uxbridge, at the end of the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, is the civic and commercial centre, with the council's offices, two shopping centres, Brunel University and a cluster of law firms around the High Street. Hayes, West Drayton and Yiewsley have the Elizabeth line, old factory sites turning into flats, the business park at Stockley Park and a large South Asian community. Ruislip, Eastcote, Ickenham and Northwood are Metroland: inter-war semis sold by the railway, now owned by their second and third families, with Northwood's detached houses among the most expensive in outer London. RAF Northolt, Hillingdon Hospital, Harefield Hospital and Mount Vernon add service families, NHS staff and the legal questions that follow both.
Courts that serve Hillingdon
Uxbridge Magistrates' Court is one of the busiest in west London and hears the first stage of criminal cases from the borough and from the airport, including offences committed on aircraft and at the border. Serious cases go to the Crown Court, usually Isleworth, and the immigration and asylum tribunal hears appeals at its hearing centre near Hatton Cross. Family cases are listed at the West London Family Court in Feltham, civil claims at the county court serving the area, and employment tribunal claims at the London or Watford tribunal office allocated by postcode.
Fees, legal aid and verification
Most Hillingdon firms publish fixed fees for conveyancing, wills, lasting powers of attorney and settlement agreements, and charge by the hour for disputes, with an estimate for each stage. Legal aid still funds criminal defence, immigration detention work, family cases with domestic abuse or a local authority involved and some housing matters; the firms in Uxbridge and Hayes that hold contracts are used to being asked.
