Since October 2024 every tip and service charge paid in a Cornish café, pub or hotel has had to be passed on to the staff in full, under a fair written policy. For a county whose summer economy runs on hospitality, that one change has sent more workers and employers to employment solicitors in Truro than any other recent reform, and it sits on top of the older problems of seasonal work: contracts that end when the visitors leave, holiday pay that was never calculated properly, and zero-hours arrangements that quietly became full-time jobs.
Cornwall's other employers bring their own questions. The Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske and Cornwall Council are two of the county's biggest workplaces, and whistleblowing, discrimination and long-term sickness cases from the public sector are a steady part of a Truro employment solicitor's week. The docks and shipyard at Falmouth, the airport and spaceport at Newquay and the universities at Penryn add redundancy consultations, TUPE transfers and fixed-term contract disputes. Fishing is different again: share fishermen are normally self-employed, so a crew member who falls out with a skipper may have no tribunal claim at all, and needs to be told so quickly.
Timing decides many cases. Acas early conciliation has to be started within three months less one day of a dismissal or the act complained of, and claims from Cornish workplaces are then listed by the employment tribunal's south-west region, frequently by video. Settlement agreements, which many Cornish employers now offer when a job ends, must be signed off by an independent adviser, and the employer usually pays towards that advice.
Most Truro firms offer a free or low-cost first conversation, fixed fees for settlement agreements and contract reviews, and hourly or staged fees for a contested claim; check any household insurance for legal expenses cover first.
