Very disappointing and unprofessional experience.
My appointment was booked for 4:30pm and I arrived at approximately 4:20pm. The solicitor did not appear to be busy and was sitting with the secretary looking through wedding photographs.
I had been quoted £10 over the phone for a statutory declaration. When I arrived, I was suddenly told the charge would be £60 because the solicitor apparently needed to “advise me”. This was my sixth statutory declaration, so I explained clearly that I did not require legal advice and only needed the declaration witnessed.
The situation then became unnecessarily confrontational. When I decided not to proceed at the increased price, she became rude, told me I had wasted her time and initially would not give my document back to me.
I find this particularly disappointing from a regulated solicitor. I would expect complete transparency about fees before an appointment, together with professional and courteous conduct when dealing with clients.
Had I been told on the phone that the fee was £60, I could simply have decided whether or not to attend. Quoting £10 and then asking for six times that amount once I arrived is unacceptable in my view.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend this firm and I will also be raising my concerns regarding the conduct and fee transparency with the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
