Why does a borough of 1930s semis, grammar schools and quiet parks hold one of the busiest Crown Courts in England? Snaresbrook Crown Court sits in a Victorian Gothic former orphanage beside Eagle Pond in Wanstead, and it tries serious cases from a large slice of east London, which gives Redbridge a criminal bar and a cluster of defence solicitors out of all proportion to its own crime figures. Barkingside Magistrates' Court, a few miles north, handles the first hearings. For most residents, though, the law arrives through quieter doors: a house sale in Clayhall, a family business on Ilford Lane, a will in Woodford.
Ilford to Woodford
Redbridge runs from Ilford, a town centre of office blocks, the Elizabeth line and new residential towers, out through Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell Heath to the east, Gants Hill, Barkingside and Hainault to the north, and Wanstead and Woodford to the west, where the houses are larger and Epping Forest begins. Solicitors cluster on Cranbrook Road and the High Road in Ilford, around Gants Hill roundabout and along the High Road through South Woodford and Woodford Green. The borough's South Asian communities, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan Tamil among them, are served by firms whose solicitors speak the languages of their clients, and a long-established Jewish community around Gants Hill and Clayhall has its own traditions of advice.
Where cases are heard
Beyond Snaresbrook and Barkingside, Redbridge sends its family cases to the East London Family Court in Canary Wharf, its employment claims to the London East tribunal and its civil and possession claims to county courts outside the borough, since Ilford's own county court closed.
What people in Redbridge need
Property work follows the housing: extended semis that need their planning history checked, Victorian terraces in Ilford converted into flats or shared houses, new leasehold towers near the station and larger houses in Wanstead and Woodford that take estates over the inheritance tax threshold. Family and divorce solicitors deal with three-generation households, marriages contracted abroad, wedding gold and property in two countries. King George Hospital at Goodmayes, the council and the schools are the big employers, but most working residents commute into the City and bring their employment problems home. Ilford Lane's shops, restaurants and wedding businesses, and the car dealers strung along Eastern Avenue, keep business solicitors occupied with leases, partnerships and disputes.
Fees and legal aid
Fixed fees are normal for conveyancing, wills, lasting powers of attorney and an uncontested divorce; disputes are charged by the hour or in stages. Legal aid still covers crime, care proceedings, domestic abuse and some housing matters, and a number of Redbridge firms hold contracts.
